1981 Ferrari 512 BB/LM Is One Of Only Five To Race In The 24 Hours of Le Mans Twice In Period

This is one of the most original 512 BB/LMs around and is practically untouched since the Le Mans 1984.

By 1981, Ferrari had refined the 512 BB/LM design with a 3rd series of the model. Now with exaggerated aerodynamics and a factory rating of 480-horsepower, the car that Chinetti had requested for his North American Racing Team had proved itself as a worthy competitor. Power came from a 5.0-liter flat-12 F102B engine with forged internals and high compression pistons. New to the bodywork was an aerodynamic nose. an elongated tail section, and a revised midsection that incorporated intakes built into the skirts.

The 512 was a replacement for the front-engine Daytona. The "BB" in the model name is widely believed to stand for "Berlinetta Boxer", and in Italian "Berlinetta" details a sports coupe. The word "Boxer" refers to the horizontally opposed mid-mounted flat-12 engine. According to a Ferrari engineer, BB actually stands for "Berlinetta Bialbero" which means dual camshaft. Behind the doors of Modena, they discreetly refer to it as "Brigitte Bardot" which means "exceptionally beautiful", like the French actress.

This example was bought directly from Ferrari by Fabrizio Violati’s Scuderia Bellancauto. It is one of only 16 BB/LM Series Three competition cars made from 1980 to 1982, while many BB/LMs went into private collections. This car got to work on the track. It raced under the number 15 car at the Monza 1,000 Kilometres. It would go to continue to race until 1985, and was then retired to Collezione Maranello Rosso museum in San Marino and then transferred to Collezione’s new museum in Rimini, Italy.

This is one of the most original examples you can find, and you can bring it home to your own collection now.
