Originally designed for military use, the Volvo C304 earned a reputation for exceptional durability and all-terrain capability thanks to its unique drivetrain setup and rugged engineering. Built as part of Volvo’s C3 military vehicle family, the C304 served alongside the smaller C303 4x4 and the larger C306 6x6 between 1974 and 1984.

The C3 platform represented decades of Swedish military off-road development, tracing its roots back through earlier Volvo military vehicles including the TP21 Sugga and the wartime TPV. Volvo developed the C304 specifically to handle harsh terrain, remote conditions and demanding military operations while maintaining reliability and simplicity in the field.

At the heart of the truck is Volvo’s naturally aspirated 3.0-liter B30A inline-six engine producing 117 horsepower and 152 lb-ft of torque in military specification. The engine is paired with a four-speed manual transmission and a dual-range transfer case that distributes power to all six wheels.

One of the defining characteristics of the C304 is its use of portal axles, a design that places the differential housing above the wheel centerline to dramatically improve ground clearance. The setup gives the truck more than 15 inches of clearance beneath the differentials, putting it on par with legendary off-road machines such as the Unimog.

The drivetrain also includes independently locking differentials on all three axles, allowing the truck to maintain traction across mud, rocks, snow and uneven terrain. The rear axles utilize a walking-beam leaf spring arrangement that helps distribute weight evenly and improves articulation over obstacles.

The example currently offered for sale is finished in drab green and retains much of its original military appearance, including a split windshield, fold-out side steps, mud flaps and troop-carrying rear seating. The truck rides on black 16-inch wheels wrapped in BFGoodrich 285/75 tires, with a full-size spare mounted at the rear.

Inside, the cabin features green vinyl bucket seats and original military-style controls, including dashboard-mounted differential selectors. VDO instrumentation includes a 100 km/h speedometer along with fuel and coolant gauges. The rear compartment retains its original troop transport layout with side-mounted bench seating and rear-facing jump seats.

Volvo produced 8,718 C3-series vehicles across all variants, with roughly 75% entering military service in Sweden and abroad. The vehicles also served in countries including Malaysia, Angola and several Baltic states.

In recent decades, surplus C304s have become increasingly popular among overlanding enthusiasts due to their compact dimensions, heavy-duty construction and impressive off-road performance. Many owners convert them into expedition vehicles with camper setups, diesel swaps and modern upgrades.

This particular 1975 Volvo C304 was imported to the United States under previous ownership and is now being offered on dealer consignment in Dripping Springs, Texas, with a clean Texas title.
