This Chopped 1972 VW Beetle Just Won Hot Wheels' UK Legends Tour

A wildly reworked 1972 Volkswagen Beetle has been crowned the UK winner of the 2026 Hot Wheels Legends Tour, taking the title at CarFest at Silverstone Circuit on August 29. The car, nicknamed the "Volksrod," beat out a track-focused 1989 Fiat Panda and a 1951 Tempo Matador truck that once hauled potatoes in Australia to earn a spot in Hot Wheels' Garage of Legends and a shot at becoming a real 1:64 scale die-cast model.

The build was created by Ray Ramsey, a builder with more than 150 custom projects behind him, and it stayed a secret right up until its reveal at Volksworld in 2025. Every part of the Beetle was judged against three criteria that define the Legends Tour: authenticity, creativity, and garage spirit. This year that judging panel included former Top Gear host Richard Hammond, Hot Wheels design manager Dwayne Vance, and TV presenter Nicola Hume, and all three landed on the Beetle as the standout of the UK field.

What makes the Volksrod so striking is how far Ramsey pushed away from anything resembling a stock Beetle. The body has been chopped by 14 inches, the engine sits 6 inches higher than stock, and the front axle was pushed forward by 10 inches, giving the whole car a squashed, hot-rod stance that borrows heavily from the 1960s work of builders like Ed Roth. Oddly, under all that reshaping sits a completely stock Twin Port 1300 engine, a deliberate contrast to the madness surrounding it.

The detailing is where the car really earns its garage-spirit points. A champagne cooler now houses the single headlamp and speedometer, a vintage cine camera picked up for a single pound sits in the cabin, and a dome salvaged from a primary school toilet block adds an odd bit of glazing. Corvette bumpers were flipped and mounted inverted, a strainer from a chip fryer was reworked into part of the seat, and a chain-link steering wheel pairs with an egg whisk standing in as the radio aerial. Ramsey even engineered his own hydraulic suspension setup using a fluid dispersal system, and mismatched wheels front and rear, pulled from a 1951 truck and a Porsche, complete the scavenged look. Getting inside means either lifting the clamshell roof or folding down a passenger door flat against the body.

There's a personal weight behind the build, too. Ramsey is currently battling prostate cancer, and once the Beetle is done touring, it will be sold with proceeds going toward cancer research. Ramsey has said the goal was simple: "I just built this car to make people smile."

This marks the ninth year of the Hot Wheels Legends Tour and its biggest run yet, with builders from 19 countries competing for a spot in the Global Grand Finale this November in the United States. The UK stop at CarFest also carried the largest Hot Wheels display the tour has ever built, a 450-square-meter setup that included full-size versions of Garage of Legends cars, an off-road R33 Nissan Skyline, a Pontiac Firebird, and a life-size Hot Wheels Formula 1 show car. The Beetle now heads into a European regional round against other national winners before the Global Grand Finale decides which build actually gets turned into a die-cast toy.

Ramsey's Beetle joins a growing list of oddball, garage-built machines that have made it deep into the Legends Tour in past years, from regional winners built out of junkyard parts to full-blown custom buggies chasing the same die-cast dream. Whether the Volksrod goes all the way, it's already done its job: turning heads at Silverstone and giving one more reason for fans to keep watching where the Beetle, one of the most reworked platforms in custom car culture, ends up next.
