Broad Arrow Auctions' first sale as the official auction partner of Audrain Newport Concours & Motor Week is in the books, and it was a 112-year-old American speedster that set the pace. Held October 2 at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island, the single-day Broad Arrow Audrain Auction totaled $8.3 million, with 57 of 65 lots finding new homes for an 88 percent sell-through rate.
The room had an international flavor, too. Bidders registered from 16 countries, and nearly 40 percent of them had never bid at a Broad Arrow sale before, a promising sign for a brand-new event on the Northeast calendar. Broad Arrow and Hagerty Marketplace President Kenneth Ahn credited the turnout to the partnership with Audrain and said the results show that best-in-category cars from every era and price point are still drawing serious buyers.
The Bearcat Comes Home to Rhode Island
Top honors went to the Rockefeller- and Harrah-owned 1914 Stutz 4E Bearcat we profiled ahead of the sale. Chassis 2250 was sold by Principal Auctioneer Lydia Fenet for a final $1,875,000, landing squarely inside its $1.75 million to $2 million estimate.
It was a fitting venue for the result. This Bearcat was bought new by a Rhode Island banker more than a century ago, and its ownership history can be traced without a gap from the day it left Indianapolis. That kind of continuous paper trail is almost unheard of among pre-1915 Bearcats, and it is a big reason why this AACA National First Place winner commanded seven figures. With its bolster tank, monocle windshield and T-head four, the Bearcat remains the definitive American performance car of the Brass Era.
Modern Supercars Hold Their Ground
Behind the Stutz, the rest of the top of the order leaned decidedly modern:
- 2009 Ferrari 430 Scuderia – Finished in Bianco Avus with Nero Scuderia stripes over a Tessuto interior, the track-focused V8 brought $538,500 against a $500,000 to $650,000 estimate.
- 2022 McLaren 765LT Spider – A low-mileage, well-optioned example in Vega Blue sold for $516,500 (estimate: $500,000 to $700,000).
- 2011 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Coupe – A well-equipped, carefully kept gullwing realized $428,500, within its $425,000 to $475,000 range.
- 2008 Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione – A rare U.S.-market car showing just 904 miles sold for $368,000 (estimate: $350,000 to $425,000). We've long been fans of Alfa's carbon-bodied 8C, and the market clearly agrees.
The 1970 Ferrari Dino 246 GT we highlighted before the sale also cracked the top five at $456,000.
American Classics Beat Their Estimates
One of the stronger storylines of the day was a 17-car private collection of American classics, which as a group outperformed its pre-sale estimates. Highlights included:
- 1970 Dodge Coronet R/T Hardtop 426 Hemi – A matching-numbers restoration in Plum Crazy Metallic sold for $207,200, topping its $150,000 to $200,000 estimate.
- 1956 Continental Mark II – An award-winning car in Deep Green over two-tone green leather soared to $173,600, well past its $100,000 to $150,000 estimate.
- 1969 Pontiac GTO Convertible – A matching-numbers, well-optioned drop-top in Crystal Turquoise brought $128,800, above its $100,000 to $125,000 range.
