This 1932 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Lungo Spider Is Heading to Gooding's Pebble Beach Sale

Vittorio Jano's 8C 2300 is often called the car that saved Alfa Romeo, and Gooding Christie's is bringing a Lungo-chassis Spider to its Pebble Beach sale. This example, chassis 2211086, carries coachwork built in the style of Zagato, one of the most sought-after looks to grace the model. Coachwork built later "in the style of" a coachbuilder rather than by the original house is a nuance worth understanding before bidding on any prewar classic, a topic our Restomod vs. Original: Which Is Right for You? touches on as well.

Introduced in 1931, the 8C 2300 arrived when Alfa Romeo desperately needed a win, both on track and on the balance sheet. Jano's straight-eight engine, built essentially as two four-cylinder blocks joined at a central gear-driven camshaft train, propelled the model to victory at Le Mans four years running and swept the Mille Miglia as well, cementing Alfa's reputation as the dominant sports car maker of the early 1930s. Alfa offered the 8C on two wheelbases: the shorter Corto chassis for competition-focused coachwork, and the longer Lungo seen here, intended for more formal touring bodies while still carrying serious performance underneath.

Finished in black with a black interior, this Spider presents the classic proportions the 8C is known for: long hood, cutaway doors, and a low, purposeful stance that still looks fast standing still nearly a century later. Full lot details, including estimate and provenance, are expected to be published closer to the sale. You can follow the listing and register to bid over at Gooding Christie's.
