Porsche Recommissions Carrera GT as Salzburg Tribute Honoring Le Mans Legacy

Porsche has completed a full factory recommission of its only V10-powered road car, transforming a 2005 Carrera GT into a one-off tribute that links modern engineering with the brand’s Le Mans history. The project was carried out through Porsche’s Sonderwunsch Manufaktur program at the request of owner Victor Gómez, a collector based in Puerto Rico, who sought both a mechanical reset and a visual homage to one of the company’s most iconic race cars.

Rather than limiting the work to cosmetic changes, Porsche fully disassembled the Carrera GT and rebuilt it to what the company documents as zero-mile condition. Major technical systems were overhauled, including the naturally aspirated V10, and carbon-fiber components were refinished before the exterior received its final paint. Gómez made multiple trips to Germany during the process, reviewing progress and approving details throughout the build.

The most striking element is the exterior livery. The car wears the red-and-white Salzburg colors associated with the Porsche 917K that delivered the manufacturer’s first overall victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1970. Translating that design onto a Carrera GT required extensive design work, as the proportions and panel shapes differ significantly from the original prototype racer. Porsche designers refined the layout through sketches, digital renderings, and physical tape mockups before finalizing the graphics. The body was finished in Indian Red and white, with the number 23 hand-painted on the exterior.

To support the owner’s intention to drive the car on public roads, Porsche applied a protective clear film over the painted graphics. Matte black carbon fiber accents appear across the roof panels, pillars, mirrors, air inlets, and rear diffuser, while the engine cover grilles feature a matte black anodized finish. The five-spoke wheels were refinished in black and fitted with colored Porsche crests.

Inside, the Carrera GT received Guards Red Alcantara on key surfaces, including portions of the dashboard, door panels, steering wheel, and center console. Matte carbon fiber details remain prominent, while FIA-approved black fabric sourced from the 918 Spyder was used for the seat centers and headrests. The red theme extends to the front trunk lining and fitted luggage.

The project underscores the enduring significance of the Carrera GT, produced in just 1,270 examples from 2003 to 2006 and powered by a 5.7-liter V10 originally derived from Porsche’s abandoned LMP 2000 endurance program. With recent factory-backed tire support developed alongside Michelin, the recommissioned Salzburg Carrera GT reflects Porsche’s intent to preserve its icons not as static displays, but as machines meant to be driven.
