No-Reserve 1970 Opel GT Draws Bidding Attention in New Mexico

A 1970 Opel GT is attracting strong interest at auction in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, where bidding has reached $5,000 with several days remaining and no reserve set for the sale. The compact European sports coupe has logged 14,800 miles indicated, with total mileage listed as unknown, and is powered by a rebuilt 1.9-liter inline-four paired with a four-speed manual transmission.

The Opel GT was produced from 1968 to 1973 as a sleek, affordable sports car developed using mechanical components from the Opel Kadett B. The model first appeared as a styling exercise in 1965 before moving into production, featuring bodywork assembled in France and a long-nose fastback design that earned comparisons to American sports cars of the era. By 1970, the GT maintained its aerodynamic shape with a Kamm tail and manually operated rotating headlights, while offering front disc brakes and a live rear axle.

This example has been refinished in silver and fitted with a Weber carburetor, aluminum radiator, uprated cooling fan, and Koni shocks. Additional upgrades include replacement braking and exhaust systems, front and rear anti-sway bars, and a gear reduction starter. The car rides on 13-inch steel wheels and Remington Himax tires.

Interior features include a wood-rimmed steering wheel, VDO instrumentation, and later-model high-back bucket seats upholstered in gray. A SecretAudio AM/FM/Bluetooth stereo system has been installed beneath the luggage shelf along with aftermarket speakers.

The seller reports that the engine was balanced and modified with a bored cylinder head, oversized valves, and titanium seats. Recent work includes replacement of the clutch, water pump, shocks, and sending unit. Parts invoices from current ownership are included with the vehicle.

Known issues include imperfections in the exterior finish, missing window trim, cracks in the dashboard, and an oil pressure gauge that occasionally sticks. The seller acquired the car in June 2020 and states approximately 3,000 miles have been added since refurbishment work was completed. The Opel is offered with a clean New Mexico title and supporting parts receipts. See it here.
