There's an old saying that patience pays off, and for Bowtie faithful living anywhere near Fremont, Nebraska, that patience is about to be rewarded in a big way. One of the most jaw-dropping stockpiles of vintage Chevrolet metal the Midwest has seen in years is finally crossing the auction block, and the headline number alone is enough to stop any collector mid-scroll: more than 300 cars in all, with somewhere around 250 of them being Impalas.
Vanderbrink Auctions is running the sale, which is set for Saturday, October 3. The good news for everyone who doesn't happen to live within a short drive of eastern Nebraska is that online bidding will be available alongside the live, on-site action. Details are still trickling out, but the auction house clearly can't contain its excitement, teasing buyers with promises of Chevelles, Tri-Five Chevys, pickups, and a whole lot more beyond the sea of Impalas, and noting that the photos released so far are only preliminary.
A short walkaround video from the seller hints at just how varied the hoard really is, panning across wagons, two-doors, four-doors, genuine 409 cars, and even a handful of El Caminos. The vehicles are in every imaginable state of repair. Some are clearly destined to become parts donors, while others look like they could be coaxed back to life with a fresh battery and a little persuasion. Whether your heart belongs to the finned late-'50s cars or the cleaner lines of the '60s and '70s models, this collection seems to cover the entire spectrum. There's even a row of 1967-1972 C/K pickups sitting in the mix for the truck crowd.
Predicting the standout lots is tough without a complete inventory in hand, but history offers some clues. Third-generation Impalas built from 1961 through 1964 tend to command the strongest money, with well-sorted examples occasionally flirting with six figures and even unfinished projects holding onto meaningful value depending on what they need. A field this size is the kind of place where a patient buyer can unearth a genuine bargain, though not every car parked in the grass is a future show winner.
One way or another, a stash of this scale has something for just about everyone, provided you've got a soft spot for General Motors iron and small-block V8s. Mark your calendar for October 3 and keep an eye out as Vanderbrink releases the full lot list in the weeks ahead.
