A tastefully modified 1979 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am has surfaced for auction from Gurnee, Illinois, showcasing the timeless appeal of one of Pontiac’s most recognizable muscle cars. With bidding already at $25,000 and thousands of views, this Trans Am captures the spirit of late-1970s performance with modern enhancements.
Originally built in Los Angeles and delivered with a 301-cubic-inch V8, the car has undergone a significant transformation under prior ownership. The blue factory finish was resprayed in white and accented with black graphics, including the unmistakable “screaming chicken” hood decal that became a pop-culture symbol after the Smokey and the Bandit films.
Power now comes from a 455-cubic-inch Pontiac V8 fitted with a performance camshaft, replacing the original small-block engine. The motor is paired with a 200-4R four-speed automatic transmission for improved drivability and highway cruising. Other upgrades include Moroso valve covers, headers, and aftermarket mufflers, which contribute to a more aggressive sound and stronger performance feel.
Recent maintenance has kept the car mechanically sound, including fluid replacements, gasket and bushing updates, and carburetor tuning. The Trans Am rides on 15-inch snowflake wheels wrapped in Cooper Cobra tires, with fewer than 2,000 miles on the current set.
Inside, a refreshed interior maintains a factory-correct look, complemented by an LED digital gauge cluster. While the stereo, air conditioning, and heat are currently inoperable, the cabin retains its original muscle-era atmosphere.
