The Mazda MX-5, with over 1.25 million sold, was the world’s best-selling convertible in 2024 and continues its dominance.
The Mazda MX-5 continues to cement its reputation as the definitive affordable sports car, with the lightweight roadster claiming the title of the world’s best-selling convertible in 2024. According to Jato data, the MX-5 outsold every open-top rival globally, regardless of size or price, delivering 27,669 units worldwide.

This latest accolade adds to the MX-5’s long-standing record as the best-selling two-seat roadster, a title it first secured in 2000. Since its 1989 debut, Mazda has produced more than 1.25 million examples across four generations, with production centered at the company’s Ujina plant in Hiroshima, Japan.
In the UK, the MX-5 has become both a cultural touchstone and a sales success. Data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) shows the MX-5 remains Britain’s most popular two-seat sports car and ranks second overall among convertibles. More than 135,000 units have been sold in the UK, with nearly 30,000 from the fourth generation alone. Already in 2025, 859 examples have been delivered, making it the nation’s best-selling sports car outside luxury segments dominated by Porsche.

Mazda UK Managing Director Jeremy Thomson praised the car’s enduring appeal. “The MX-5 is Mazda’s brand icon and it embodies all that is great about our products,” he said, noting its unique balance of affordability and driver engagement.
Available as a fabric-roof Roadster or a Retractable Fastback (RF), today’s MX-5 range offers three trims—Prime-Line, Exclusive-Line, and Homura—with either a 1.5-liter or 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G engine. New models registered from September 2025 also benefit from a six-year, 100,000-mile warranty.

From 56 special editions in the UK to countless owners’ clubs worldwide, the MX-5’s legacy extends beyond sales figures. It has become a beloved fixture of grassroots motorsport and remains one of the most celebrated sports cars in history.
