A nearly untouched 1989 Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z is getting fresh attention after a new driving video featuring Jay Leno and Gabriel Iglesias brought the time capsule muscle car back onto public roads.
The Camaro shows just over 400 miles on the odometer, an extraordinarily low figure for a vehicle now more than three decades old. When Iglesias acquired the car, mileage stood at 344 miles, reflecting decades of careful, climate-controlled storage. Since then, the odometer has climbed modestly, consistent with Iglesias’ stated preference for driving his cars rather than keeping them permanently parked.
The IROC-Z remains entirely original, down to its interior and exterior presentation. Finished in a burnt orange or clay-toned paint, the car stands apart from the more familiar blue, black, or white examples commonly associated with the model. Adding to its understated appearance, this Camaro was ordered without the trademark IROC-Z side decals and without removable T-top roof panels, giving it a cleaner, less common configuration.
Power comes from a 5.7-liter V8 equipped with Tuned Port Injection, rated between 230 and 240 horsepower depending on factory specifications. The engine is paired with an automatic transmission. Despite output figures that seem modest by modern standards, both drivers note that the car still feels lively and responsive on the road. The engine bay remains remarkably clean, with only practical updates such as a modern battery and replacement tires fitted for safety.
The car’s documented history traces back to a Chevrolet dealership in Ohio before it entered a private collection, where it remained largely untouched for nearly four decades. It later surfaced for sale on Bring a Trailer, where Iglesias purchased it for $56,000. The original window sticker lists a 1989 MSRP of $18,779, a figure that roughly equates to $47,000 today when adjusted for inflation. Notably, the window sticker indicates a manual transmission, despite the car being equipped with an automatic.
Now driven and enjoyed rather than sealed away, the low-mileage IROC-Z offers a rare glimpse into late-1980s performance car culture, preserved almost exactly as it left the showroom floor.
