British car YouTuber Mat Armstrong has built a career out of reviving wrecked supercars, but his latest project — a $6 million Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport — may be the one that finally stops him. Not because of the crash damage, but because Bugatti itself has reportedly stepped in to make sure it never drives again.
Armstrong, known for rebuilding everything from BMWs to Lamborghinis, learned of the wrecked Chiron in Miami and immediately booked a flight. Only 60 Pur Sports were ever produced, and after this crash, the world was down to 59. Determined to save it, he raced across the Atlantic to inspect the car before it disappeared into the insurance system and onto the auction block.
But the trip didn’t go smoothly. On the way to the workshop, a Chevrolet cut across traffic and slammed into a Ferrari driven by one of Armstrong’s team members. The $4,000–$5,000 repair was minor compared to what awaited them: the crumpled nose of a hypercar once worth millions.
The Chiron’s front end had absorbed heavy damage — deployed airbags, cracked carbon fiber, destroyed headlights, and a twisted frame. Repair estimates totaled around $1.7 million in parts alone. A Bugatti technician flew from France to inspect it and declared the car a total loss. The vehicle was given a salvage title, and Bugatti reportedly “locked” its VIN, meaning no authorized dealer can sell replacement parts for it.
That decision effectively ends any hope of a private rebuild. The only path to resurrection would be a factory restoration in France, which would cost nearly as much as buying another Chiron outright.
Still, Armstrong hasn’t given up. For a man who’s turned wrecks into road-worthy marvels before, the Bugatti challenge might be less about money — and more about proving that even the rarest machines deserve a second chance.
