Critics pronounced the 442 to be the best handling of the intermediate muscle cars and an all around balanced performer.
Oldsmobile got serious with the 1965 Olds 442 option package and made it optional on all two-door F-85s and Cutlass models, thus eliminating the four-door models.
Power was boosted with the replacement of a new 345 hp 400ci engine. The 4-4-2 name now signified the 400ci engine, four-barrel carb, and dual exhaust.
In addition to the 4-speed manual, customers had the option of a 2-speed Jetaway automatic, as well.
With more marketing, sales soared to 25,003 produced. Critics pronounced the 442 to be the best handling of the intermediate muscle cars and an all around balanced performer.
