Overview

The biggest news for the 1965 Chevelle was the introduction of the Z-16 package boasting a 396ci V8 and 375 horsepower. This pavement pounder put the power to the rear wheels with the help of stouter suspension, front and rear anti-roll bars, and faster power-assisted steering.

Another model was added to the lineup, the 300 Deluxe helped bridge the gap between the 300 and the Malibu. Overall, the 1965 Chevelle changed little except the fact it was stretched a few inches, maintaining the 115-inch wheelbase, which cleaned up a few lines, and Chevrolet added some additional trim options.

The 300 series was the base model, but it could be had in a two-door station wagon that was not available in the other two series.

The new 300 Deluxe added little to the 300, with the exception of a few cosmetic upgrades like more interior color options (red, fawn, and aqua) and upgraded trim options.

The Malibu proved to be the most popular with the highest sales records mainly because of interior upgrades like tailored fabrics with metallic thread accents. It also sold well because it had the most model options including: sport coupe, convertible, 4-door sedan, and 2-seat wagon.

The Malibu SS now offered the option of choosing any of the Chevelle engines and included specialized SS trim inside and out. Additional colors were available including eight two-tone models. Now up for grabs was the aforementioned Z-16 package, in which 201 were produced (one convertible).
