Overview

The Ford Mustang made its introduction on April 17, 1964 at the World’s Fair in New York, and nationwide at Ford showrooms. The car was met with welcoming arms and would go on to set sales records that have still yet to be broken, and the pony car class it helped create is the longest running.

The Mustang combined sporty looks, economy, and performance in a package that had an affordable price tag. It was marketed as the working man's Thunderbird offering up a rear bench seat.

This year is technically dubbed 1964 1/2 due to it's mid-year launch. Ford executives estimated moving 100K units, but from the launch until the 1965s started production in September, 1964, an astonishing 126,538 1964 1/2 units were moved. Within only three months, the Mustang had hit its estimated 100k units, and sold a record-setting 418,000 Mustangs during its first calendar year on the market.

The car could be had with an inline 6-cylinder, all the way up to a 271 hp 289ci Hi-Po Windsor V8 offering respectable performance for the day.
