Vigilante 4×4, the Texas builder known for high-performance Jeep SJ restomods, has entered the electric era with a ground-up EV chassis designed for classic Wagoneers, Cherokees and J-Trucks. The company built its reputation by installing powerful HEMI engines into vintage Jeeps, but its latest project shifts focus toward a new form of performance without abandoning the brand’s traditional offerings.
Rather than performing a typical electric conversion, Vigilante engineered an entirely new platform. The process began with detailed 3D scans of original Jeep bodies to ensure precise fitment and proper proportions. From there, the shop designed an architecture intended specifically for electric power, retaining the familiar lines of the SJ while rethinking nearly every mechanical component beneath the surface.
The layout differs significantly from earlier gasoline builds. The EV chassis removes the transmission, transfer case and driveshafts, replacing them with dual motors mounted at the front and rear. This setup provides permanent four-wheel drive, instant torque delivery and improved control, positioning the chassis as both a capable off-road foundation and a modernized take on a beloved classic.
Engineering refinements extend throughout the structure. A centrally located, low-mounted battery pack lowers the center of gravity and enhances stability. Both axles use independent suspension, supported by FOX shocks, while six-piston brakes provide stronger stopping power. The system also includes regenerative braking, dual charging ports and upgraded cooling designed to withstand demanding use.
Despite the move toward electrification, the company remains committed to preserving the identity of the SJ. The new platform maintains the Wagoneer’s unmistakable stance and traditional proportions, adapting its character to a powertrain that produces no sound yet promises substantial capability.
Still in the prototype phase, the project has already generated enthusiasm among Jeep fans. Vigilante 4×4 plans to refine the design with feedback from its community before moving toward full production, signaling a future where classic off-road icons can continue forward with electric power.
