Subaru Unveils Japan-Only BRZ Type RA With Race-Inspired Upgrades

Subaru has revealed a new limited-production variant of the BRZ exclusively for Japan, launching the Type RA as a highly focused, race-inspired addition to the lineup. The model follows closely behind the debut of the BRZ Yellow Edition, but this version leans heavily into motorsport hardware and tuning. Only 300 units will be built, making it one of the rarest BRZ versions to date.

The Type RA begins with the BRZ STI Sport trim as its foundation, a configuration that parallels the BRZ tS sold in the United States. Subaru developed the car with influence from the Team SDA Engineering BRZ CNF Concept that competes in the Super Taikyu Series, resulting in a model built with track-ready intent.

Exterior changes include a full STI bodykit featuring a front splitter, rear bumper extension and a performance muffler with larger tailpipes. Buyers can also opt for a carbon-fiber rear wing. The car rides on 18-inch BBS alloy wheels in matte gray or bronze, paired with either WR Blue Pearl or Crystal White Pearl paint.

Most of the upgrades, however, sit beneath the surface. Subaru’s 2.4-liter FA24 boxer engine receives lighter racing-grade internals, including revised pistons, connecting rods, crankshaft, flywheel and clutch cover. While Subaru has not confirmed whether these changes affect the standard 232-horsepower output, the manufacturer says the revisions are designed to deliver smoother throttle response and reduced vibration.

Additional mechanical improvements come from motorsport development programs. The Type RA adopts the rear differential case used in the Cup Car Basic and integrates a Shift Assist Function featuring Rev Sync for downshifts and Flat Shift for full-throttle upshifts. A new set of ZF dampers and an STI rear flexible draw stiffener provide chassis gains, while upgraded Brembo brakes with ventilated discs and gold calipers handle stopping duty.

Subaru will limit production to 200 units for the standard model and 100 units for versions equipped with the optional rear wing. Pricing begins at ¥4,972,000, with the wing-equipped model listed at ¥5,478,000. Availability will be determined through a lottery system open at Subaru dealerships from November 13 to 30.

The BRZ Type RA will also appear publicly at Fuji Speedway during the final round of the ENEOS Super Taikyu Series this weekend, underscoring its direct connection to Subaru’s racing programs.
