A stolen 2018 Corvette Grand Sport was recovered in Missouri, but investigators say the case may be tied to drug trafficking.
A 2018 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport stolen from a Kansas City neighborhood has been recovered, though authorities say the case is far from closed.
The Blade Silver sports car was located by the Missouri State Highway Patrol inside a garage at Precision Touch Auto Sales in Independence. Investigators say the recovery was made possible not through the factory OnStar system, but via an aftermarket tracking device that traced the Corvette’s movements from the owner’s home in the Waldo neighborhood to the business off Highway 40.
“Now that we’ve located this vehicle, we can kind of retrace the vehicle’s steps,” said Cpl. Justin Ewing of the Highway Patrol.
The theft was the second attempt on the car in as many weeks. In April, suspects were chased off by a neighbor during the first incident, but not before they fired several rounds into nearby homes and vehicles. No injuries were reported, but the gunfire left residents shaken.
“They came back to the exact same place,” said Marlene Standley, whose home was struck multiple times in the earlier shooting.
The second attempt proved successful. Neighbor Megan Hogan, who called 911 during the theft, said the suspects pointed firearms at the Corvette owner’s home after the car alarm went off, then sped away. She estimated it took 15 minutes for police to arrive.
Authorities have not released details on how the vehicle ended up at the Independence business. The ongoing investigation has already resulted in a significant drug seizure, leading police to suspect a link to drug trafficking.
“It’s our goal in public safety to make sure we protect lives and property,” Ewing said.
The suspects remain at large as law enforcement continues to piece together the events leading to the Corvette’s recovery.
