One-of-a-Kind 1981 Rolls-Royce Corniche Shooting Brake Conceals a High-Tech Surprise

Few vehicles embody old-world luxury quite like the Rolls-Royce Corniche. But one example from 1981 has just been reimagined into something entirely unexpected — a custom-built shooting brake complete with a concealed, electric bike carrier designed to hold two triathlon bicycles.

The project, commissioned by an unnamed rally driver and triathlete, was undertaken by Dutch automotive designer Niels van Roij, known for creating bespoke coachbuilt vehicles. Originally a coupe owned by the same family for four decades, the car — affectionately called “Henry” — was transformed over two and a half years into what’s now dubbed Henry II.

To achieve its new silhouette, the Corniche’s steel body was reworked from the B-pillar rearward. The redesigned rear end, roofline, and C-pillars create a proper grand tourer profile — one Rolls-Royce itself never envisioned. The result is a seamless blend of classic craftsmanship and contemporary ingenuity.

The most innovative feature, however, remains hidden. Tucked neatly into the rear bumper is an electrically operated system that extends at the push of a button, revealing a rack capable of carrying two triathlon bikes. The design eliminates the need for an external rack, preserving the Corniche’s graceful lines.

Other refinements include British Racing Green paint, new glasswork, a hydraulic tailgate, and period-correct chrome accents. Inside, the cabin features reworked wood trim, tweed upholstery, and rally-inspired details like a Brantz meter and fold-out map panel. An electrically folding rear bench and custom luggage set complete the build.

While the original 6.75-liter V8 remains untouched, Henry II will soon test its capabilities on the road, competing in events such as the RAID Switzerland and British Classic Car Meeting in St. Moritz — proving that even a Rolls-Royce can still surprise.
