Mercedes-Benz is expanding its latest round of updates beyond its flagship sedan, introducing a refreshed version of its largest SUV, the GLS, for the 2027 model year. Positioned as the brand’s top-tier utility vehicle, the updated GLS receives subtle design changes, upgraded technology and improved performance across its lineup.
The exterior redesign focuses primarily on the front of the vehicle, where a larger grille and more pronounced headlamps give the SUV a stronger presence. The lighting system has been overhauled to incorporate a signature three-pointed star motif, adding a distinctive visual identity. For the first time in a Mercedes SUV, buyers can also opt for an illuminated standing star ornament, emphasizing the model’s flagship status.
Inside, the GLS adopts a major technological upgrade with the introduction of the MBUX Superscreen as standard equipment. Stretching across the dashboard, the system includes three 12.3-inch displays powered by Mercedes-Benz’s new MB.OS operating system. The software supports over-the-air updates and introduces expanded artificial intelligence capabilities, though its real-world impact on driving remains uncertain. The SUV retains its three-row layout, offering seating configurations for up to six occupants while maintaining ample space for taller passengers in the rear.
Performance improvements highlight the update. The GLS 580 features a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 engine with a flat-plane crank, producing 530 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque. This marks an increase over the previous model and aligns with evolving emissions requirements. The GLS 450 continues with a 3.0-liter inline-six engine delivering 375 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque. Acceleration times remain competitive, with the GLS 580 reaching 60 mph in 4.6 seconds and the GLS 450 in 5.4 seconds. All variants include standard all-wheel drive.
Ride quality also sees enhancements. The GLS comes standard with Airmatic air suspension, while higher trims can be equipped with E-Active Body Control, a system that uses advanced processing and shared vehicle data to optimize comfort.
Pricing and availability details have not yet been announced, though the updated model is expected to command a premium over current versions.
