Hagerty introduces new UK insurance policies for drivers as young as 21 and expands classics to include vehicles built before 2010.

Hagerty, the global automotive lifestyle and insurance brand, has unveiled two new policies designed to welcome a younger generation of car enthusiasts into the world of classic ownership. Announced at Bicester Motion on August 28, the programs expand eligibility for both drivers and vehicles, reflecting a shift in the demographics and expectations of today’s collector community.

For the first time, Hagerty will insure classic car drivers in the UK from the age of 21, provided they hold at least three years of driving experience and own a separate everyday vehicle. The update significantly lowers the previous age barrier, allowing more young enthusiasts to insure collectible models that often shape their passion for motoring.

Equally notable is the expansion of what qualifies as a “classic.” Under the new policy, any collector or specialist vehicle produced prior to 2010 can now be insured as a classic, including modern icons like the early Nissan GT-R, BMW M3, and even emerging collectible hot hatches.

In a second product launch, Hagerty has also introduced coverage for classic vehicles used as everyday drivers. Cars over 15 years old can now be insured for regular use, provided the main driver is at least 25. These policies, underwritten by Aviva, are capped at 5,000 miles per year and offer multiple levels of coverage.

Mark Roper, Managing Director of Hagerty International, emphasized the importance of adapting to younger collectors. “The type of cars we now class as a classic is changing, as is the age demographic of owners and collectors,” he said. Roper added that with more flexible work arrangements and a wider range of enthusiast events, owners increasingly want to use their classics more frequently.

The new offerings are immediately available and continue Hagerty’s push to expand beyond insurance into a full spectrum of events, community spaces, and cultural engagement—ensuring the future of classic car enthusiasm remains vibrant and inclusive.
