GM Revives Rear-Wheel Drive Sedans With New Cadillac CT5 and Mystery Model

General Motors is reasserting its commitment to driving enthusiasts with a return to rear-wheel-drive passenger cars in the United States. Sources indicate that at least two new sedans are in development, both built on GM’s updated Alpha 2-2 architecture — a refined version of the platform behind the Camaro, CT4, and CT5.

The first confirmed car is the next-generation Cadillac CT5, which will continue production at the Lansing Grand River Assembly plant in Michigan. Cadillac has already confirmed an internal-combustion CT5 for North America, ensuring that the nameplate — and the factory — will have a future in a market increasingly shifting toward electric SUVs.

The Alpha 2-2 platform represents an evolution of GM’s performance-focused design. With its longitudinal engine layout and compatibility with both rear- and all-wheel-drive configurations, it’s engineered for balance, precision, and power delivery. The architecture supports larger brakes, wider tires, and advanced suspension technologies like MagneRide, positioning these upcoming cars as serious driver’s machines.

Beyond the CT5, speculation surrounds what the second model might be. Analysts point to several possibilities, including a sporty four-door Chevrolet that could resurrect a classic name like Malibu or Impala — this time with rear-wheel-drive credentials. Others believe a new Camaro could emerge on Alpha 2-2, potentially as both a coupe and convertible, or even a four-door version to rival Ford’s rumored Mustang sedan.

Powertrain options are expected to stay combustion-based, with hybrid assistance on the horizon. GM plans to reintroduce plug-in hybrids to the U.S. lineup by 2027, aligning with the Alpha 2-2 platform’s projected lifespan.

For a company balancing its EV future with traditional performance, the move signals that driver-focused sedans still have a place in GM’s strategy — and on American roads.
