Another victory for car culture.

It’s always great to see a solid movie about people who are obsessed with cars. With Ford v Ferrari we got even more, thanks to exceptional cinematography, a gripping story, and believable acting. The movie which celebrates when Ford, with the help of Shelby American, knocked Ferrari off its endurance racing pedestal at 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1966 has picked up four Oscar nominations.

Already Ford v Ferrari charmed car enthusiasts and wowed even non-car-oriented moviegoers when it was released back on November 15, 2019. Now it’s making ripples through the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which administers the Academy Awards.

The most impressive nomination is for best picture, with nine finalists in that category. The other three are for sound mixing, film editing, and sound editing. Of course, the true hope is that Ford v Ferrari will win best picture, proving even more that films about motorsports can be financially and critically successful.

What’s even better is Ford v Ferrari has educated people about the history of the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Ford GT40. The movie isn’t a straight-up history lesson, but it gives enough background people know at least a little bit about an event most Americans previously weren’t even aware happened.

Seeing the Ford GT40, numerous Shelby Cobras, multiple Ferraris, and so forth in action was wonderful eye candy. The fact filmmakers didn’t make it a propaganda film or commercial celebrating the unabashed greatness of Ford added authenticity, which was the icing on the cake.

With the solid success seen in the box office, don’t be surprised if Hollywood shows an interest in making more movies about cars, other than the Fast and Furious franchise. However, there’s always the chance the next one could be far afield of the quality and genuine nature of Ford v Ferrari. We’ll just have to wait and see.
