Ford has unveiled the Mustang Dark Horse SC, a supercharged V-8 performance model positioned as the spiritual successor to the Shelby GT500 and one of the most powerful Mustangs ever built.
The Shelby GT500 previously held the title of Ford’s most powerful Mustang with 760 horsepower, a benchmark later surpassed by the 815-horsepower Mustang GTD. The newly revealed Dark Horse SC now enters that conversation, powered by a supercharged 5.2-liter V-8 similar in configuration to the outgoing GT500. While Ford has not released an official horsepower figure, expectations place output near the 800-horsepower mark.
Ford debuted the Dark Horse SC at the Detroit Auto Show, describing it as the most advanced and track-focused version of the Mustang Dark Horse lineup to date. That lineup already includes the Dark Horse R, a track-only variant equipped with a naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V-8 producing 500 horsepower. The Dark Horse SC significantly raises the performance ceiling while maintaining its roadgoing status.
Beyond added power, Ford focused heavily on reducing weight and improving aerodynamics to sharpen the car’s track capability. The Dark Horse SC Track Package sheds approximately 150 pounds through the use of carbon-fiber wheels and Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes. Additional weight savings come from replacing steel suspension components with forged links and incorporating a lightweight magnesium strut tower brace to improve steering response and reduce unsprung mass. Certain versions also feature 3D-printed titanium accents derived from the Mustang GTD program.
Aerodynamic revisions play a major role in the Dark Horse SC’s performance envelope. A redesigned hood and revised underbody venting help generate up to 620 pounds of downforce at 180 mph, enhancing stability and cornering grip at high speeds. While the figure falls short of full race car levels, it represents a substantial increase over previous roadgoing Mustangs.
Ford has not yet announced pricing for the Dark Horse SC, though it is expected to sit well above entry-level Ford models. Ordering is scheduled to open in March, with deliveries planned for the summer. Track appearances could follow soon after, placing the Dark Horse SC firmly in the spotlight as Ford’s next flagship Mustang for enthusiasts focused on extreme performance.
