Craigslist Find: One-Of-A-Kind 1973 Corvette Wagon

This classic sports car wagon was built by Hot Wheels designer.

Imagine being able to call up a Hot Wheels designer to put together your vision of exactly how you want your Corvette to look - that’s exactly how Mike Betterton got his Corvette. In 1973, Mike dreamed up a highly custom that was fully functional, and knew it was going to take some talent to execute it.

Harry Bradley is a GM designer who was hired by Mattel to design 11 out of the 16 first Hot Wheels. He’s clearly got a very creative edge when it comes to the appearance of the automobile. Betterton knew it was going to need some outside of the box magic, so he hired Harry Bradley to piece together the vision inside Betterton’s mind.

The product took $25,000 to complete and three years time. Buttoned up with custom glass and underneath the Corvette’s original Pearl Blue finish, the Corvette’s biggest features are the wagon back and strip of headlights on the hood. This wagon hatch with six headlights

Featured in Corvettes magazine in 1983 to tell the wild story of the build and end result, this Corvette was crashed in 1997, and has been off the road over since.

This wagon hatch with six headlights has been the subject of several features, and the seller thinks it could be a museum piece, if properly restored. Unfortunately, ‘properly’ restoring it now would likely cost more than the original commission, but it might be worth it to someone.
