Classic Shelby Continuation Cars Get a Lifeline as Velocity Restorations Revives Classic Recreations

The future of several licensed Shelby continuation models is back on solid ground after Velocity Restorations stepped in to revive Classic Recreations, a company that abruptly shut down earlier this year following a bankruptcy filing. The closure left customers without support and multiple projects unfinished, creating uncertainty around some of the most recognized continuation builds in the industry. Velocity has now acquired the company’s assets and secured a fresh licensing agreement with Carroll Shelby Licensing, Inc., reinstating production of the classic Shelby GT500 and Cobra.

Continuation models replicate historically significant vehicles no longer built by the original manufacturer, using period-correct standards and specifications. Classic Recreations had long held a prominent place in this niche, offering officially licensed versions of the 1967–68 Shelby GT500 with both steel and carbon-fiber bodies, alongside the Shelby Cobra, the 1969 Boss 429 and the 1969 Mustang Mach 1 “Hitman.” With Velocity’s acquisition, those models return to the lineup, now backed by a company with established restoration expertise.

Velocity says the revived operation is receiving a streamlined structure, updated branding and a modernized website aimed at improving the ordering process. The company reports that Classic Recreations has already filled its 2026 production schedule, with reservations now open for 2027 builds. The move positions the brand for a more stable future while maintaining its focus on craftsmanship and transparency.

Customer concerns remain an important part of the transition. Velocity previously stated it would individually consult with owners affected by Classic Recreations’ collapse. While the company notes it is not liable for previous financial commitments made under the former ownership, it plans to offer a pathway for owners to resume and complete their builds under the new structure.

Velocity is based in Pensacola, known for restoring classic Ford and Chevrolet trucks, SUVs and Mustangs. Classic Recreations is also located in Florida, less than 20 miles away. The close proximity could give both shops an advantage as they share resources and expertise. For the continuation and restomod community, the partnership offers a promising reset for a brand that had become central to the reproduction Shelby market.

With Velocity now at the helm, Classic Recreations is positioned to continue crafting modernized interpretations of some of America’s most iconic muscle machines, securing a future for GT500 and Cobra continuation cars that briefly seemed at risk.
