Bugatti Expands Nature-Inspired Collection With One-Off W16 Mistral ‘Fly Bug’ Hypercar

Bugatti has revealed a new one-off hypercar through its Sur Mesure personalization division, introducing the W16 Mistral “Fly Bug” as the latest creation commissioned by a dedicated collector whose custom Bugatti collection draws inspiration from the natural world.

The open-top hypercar joins three previously commissioned vehicles in the collector’s garage, including the Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse “Hellbug,” the Chiron “Hellbee” and the Divo “Lady Bug.” While each car carries its own unique design identity, all four projects share a common artistic direction centered around insects and wildlife motifs. For the W16 Mistral “Fly Bug,” the inspiration came from the dragonfly.

Bugatti officials said the project began through a collaborative design process between the collector and Frank Heyl, the company’s head of design. The concept was then developed further by Bugatti’s Color, Materials and Finish team based in Berlin. Designers, material specialists and visual artists worked together to transform the collector’s ideas into a fully realized hypercar with distinct visual themes and custom-crafted finishes.

One of the defining elements of the W16 Mistral “Fly Bug” is its elaborate ellipse pattern, which stretches across the exterior bodywork. The graphic gradually becomes denser toward the rear of the car before fading into the darkened air intakes, creating a flowing effect inspired by the shape and movement of dragonfly wings.

The hypercar is finished in a newly developed color known as “Dragonfly Blue,” a custom paint created specifically for this commission. Depending on lighting conditions and viewing angles, the finish transitions between shades of blue and turquoise to mimic the reflective qualities found in dragonfly wings. Bugatti also carried the custom color onto the wheel rims, despite the technical challenge of matching finishes across different materials and paint systems.

Another standout feature is the integration of the Bugatti Macaron emblem into the exterior ellipse graphic. According to the company, this marks the first time the historic badge has been incorporated directly into a painted side graphic on a Bugatti model. Designers carefully adjusted scale and placement to preserve the emblem’s detail while blending it seamlessly into the broader design.

Inside the cabin, Bugatti continued the dragonfly-inspired theme with specially developed materials and geometric patterns. The interior combines leather and Alcantara layered together using a process designed to create a three-dimensional appearance. The ellipse motif extends throughout the door panels and armrests, requiring extensive coordination between Bugatti’s design and engineering teams to ensure precise fitment across the curved interior surfaces.

The gear selector also features Bugatti’s well-known “Dancing Elephant” sculpture, a tribute to the artistic legacy of Rembrandt Bugatti and a nod to the collector’s appreciation for nature-inspired themes.

Bugatti said the W16 Mistral “Fly Bug” required months of development and craftsmanship to complete. The project also pushed the company’s design and materials teams into new territory, from developing a bespoke exterior paint to creating material applications and graphic integrations never previously attempted by the marque.

The result is another highly personalized hypercar that expands the collector’s unique Bugatti lineup while showcasing the increasingly detailed capabilities of the Sur Mesure customization program.
