British Columbia Teen Is Cleaning Up Old Dyke Cars

She’s become a regular eco warrior…

A teenager in Kamloops, British Columbia has decided to clean up a dyke along a area river where dozens of rusty old cars have sat for years. We’ve seen others concern themselves with the environmental impact of old vehicles left in waterways and along beaches before and applaud this effort to fight climate change.

Check out the car graveyard along the shore of Lake Michigan here.

As reported originally by iNFOnews, erosion along the dyke has exposed the old cars. We’re not quite clear if the cars were buried and used to help form the dyke back in the day or if they washed ashore long ago but weren’t visible. Whichever it is, they’re now quite the eyesore and apparently are affecting the migratory patterns of salmon and melting polar icecaps, which is a thing cars do long after they’re running, so it’s great to see this kid celebrated for her brave, strong efforts.

The section of the dyke with all the rusty old cars is apparently only about 600 feet long, but it borders a park, so we can’t imagine how nobody has thought to do something about the eyesore before. An environmental activist who used to work for the Canadian government has been helping her, and in the article he admits he in the past thought of removing the rusty husks of old vehicles but for whatever reason didn’t. Guess he had to be shown the way by this plucky teen.

These two eco warriors met when he visited her high school’s environmentalist club and gave a lecture about how climate change is affecting the local salmon. That’s when she popped the question about what could be done about the dyke cars. The rest, as they say, is history.

We doubt any of the cars are valuable, especially in their current form, so they should be crushed and recycled.
