1960s Devin Special on Bring a Trailer

A rare 1960s Devin Special, built for racing and street use, is now available after a full refurbishment and performance upgrades.

A rare 1960s-era Devin Special, a lightweight American sports car built to challenge Europe's finest, has resurfaced for sale following a life that took it from drag strips to road courses—and even onto the street. Refurbished and upgraded, this unique piece of American racing history is currently listed through Bring a Trailer.

Originally designed by Bill Devin of Devin Enterprises, the Devin Special embodies a distinctly American approach to motorsport: lightweight construction, affordable components, and V8 muscle. This particular example began life as a drag racer, before being converted into a road-legal sports car, and later transformed once again into a competitive SCCA race car that remains street-drivable.

Built on a robust 4130 steel tube chassis, the Devin Special now features a Chevrolet 327 cubic-inch V8 in place of its original Oldsmobile V8, delivering ample power for both track and road use. The drivetrain is enhanced with a Jaguar E-Type independent rear suspension, four-wheel disc brakes, and upgraded performance parts throughout—ensuring it handles as well as it accelerates.

Bill Devin’s use of fiberglass bodywork helped popularize lightweight construction in American motorsports, with Devin cars frequently outpacing much more expensive Ferraris, Jaguars, and Aston Martins during the 1950s and 1960s. Though Devin is perhaps less well-known outside enthusiast circles today, the brand's influence was profound, including innovations like the first automotive toothed timing belt.

The Devin Special offered here stands as a tribute to that pioneering spirit—an authentic American sports car built for racing glory but still tame enough for the open road. With its compelling history, handcrafted performance, and aggressive styling, it offers a rare opportunity for collectors seeking a machine that captures the fearless energy of mid-century American racing culture.
