The Miata MX-5 Restoration Program Is Coming To North America

Mazda will begin importing OEM parts from its Japanese restoration program to North America this summer. Better yet, they can even restore your Miata from the ground up!

Drivers of Mazda's ground-breaking Miata MX-5 rejoice! The Japanese marque has announced plans to ship components for the Miata MX-5 restoration program to North America as of June 2019.

Announced in the latter part of 2017, and officially initiated in Japan during fall last year, 23,000 owners of the Miata MX-5 have enjoyed purchasing original manufacturer parts for their roadsters through Mazda's restoration program. Some have gone the extra hurdle and had Mazda rebuild their car from the ground up.

CEO Masamiro Moro explained: “At Mazda, when our fans talk, we listen and we respond. Our fans can be reassured that additional parts, identified by owners and specialty shops, will become available by June of this year."

Moro also confirmed the company's justification for re-instating support for the marques fondest model in its lineage: “With this expanded initiative, we continue supporting roadster culture by prolonging the life of the NA model. We know how much all of this will mean to our long-term loyal fans.”

“We look forward to seeing these historic vehicles on the road and on the track for years to come.”

Celebrating 30 years since launch, the Miata MX-5 took the market by storm back in 1989. The recipe was that of a typical British sports car with indestructible reliability to boot. Born in a time where British equivalents had all but evaporated from the market, the car landed during a pivotal period for soft-top enthusiasts. Boiled down, Mazda's Miata sparked the return of affordable and sporty alfresco motoring.

Power came from a rev-happy 1.6-liter DOHC unit, developing a useful 115hp, installed within one of the finest chassis’ ever to hit the road. Simple, capable, comfortable and a shed load of fun, the Miata MX-5 has finally crept into classic status. Prices for original, low mileage first-generation cars are rising sharply.

Thankfully with the new plethora of parts available for North America, these Japanese icons should remain a sight on our roads for many years to come.
