Ultra-Rare 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air Fuelie Convertible Returns to Auction Spotlight

A rare 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air Fuelie convertible is set to reappear on the auction stage, drawing attention for its scarcity, extensive factory options, and award-winning restoration. One of only 68 fuel-injected Tri-Five convertibles produced, the car represents a pivotal moment in Chevrolet history and American performance development.

The 1957 model year marked a defining chapter in Chevrolet’s rivalry with Ford, as Chevrolet narrowly claimed the top sales position with more than 1.52 million vehicles sold. Beyond sales figures, the year stood out for the introduction of Rochester Ramjet fuel injection, a groundbreaking option that signaled a shift away from carburetion. Chevrolet offered the system for an additional $480, a significant premium at the time, but one that delivered up to 283 horsepower from the 283-cubic-inch small-block V8.

Fuel injection was available across Chevrolet’s lineup, but production numbers remained low. Of the estimated 2,570 fuel-injected Chevrolets built for 1957, approximately 1,530 were passenger cars, with the Bel Air accounting for 745 examples. Convertibles were especially scarce, making surviving examples exceptionally desirable decades later.

This particular Bel Air stands out not only for its fuel-injected powertrain but also for its extensive list of factory equipment. A total of 25 factory options were specified, including a two-speed Powerglide automatic transmission, power steering, power brakes, a PosiTraction rear axle, continental kit, backup lights, radio, heater, and oil filter. Such a high level of factory equipment places the car among the most heavily optioned Tri-Fives produced.

Finished in Larkspur Blue, the convertible has undergone a comprehensive restoration executed to a high standard. Since completion, the odometer shows just 1,864 miles. The car’s condition and authenticity have been validated through multiple judging organizations, earning Junior, Senior, and Grand National First Place honors from the National Auto Club of America. Additional accolades include several Best of Show V8 awards, a near-perfect score at a Vintage Chevrolet Cars of America event, a Chocolate Town National Trophy in AACA competition, and a Platinum Award in Classic Chevy judging.

The Bel Air last crossed the auction block in 2006 at Barrett-Jackson in Scottsdale, where it sold for $167,400. Now scheduled to appear at the Mecum Glendale auction in 2026, the car returns with an expanded résumé and continued rarity.

As one of the few remaining fuel-injected Tri-Five convertibles, this Bel Air represents both a technological milestone and a highly collectible example of Chevrolet’s Atomic Age legacy.
