A rare version of Buick’s mid-1980s turbocharged performance lineup is drawing strong online attention as a 1985 Regal T-Type equipped with the WH1 Designer’s Package heads to auction without reserve. Listed in Fayetteville, Georgia, the car has already logged thousands of views and several bids ahead of its Nov. 20 closing date.

The 1985 T-Type shared much of its mechanical hardware with the era’s Grand National, including the “hot air” turbocharged 3.8-liter V6 that helped position Buick as an unlikely performance leader. The engine used an AiResearch T3 turbocharger, sequential fuel injection, and distributor-less ignition to produce 200 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque. Paired with a TH-2004R four-speed automatic with overdrive and a limited-slip rear axle, the Regal delivered acceleration that outpaced contemporary V8 competitors.

Production numbers were modest, with only 2,100 T-Types built for 1985 and just 525 of them ordered with the WH1 Designer’s Package. That option combined a black-and-charcoal two-tone exterior treatment, matching bumper fillers, a rear spoiler, and unique striping. This example no longer carries the original contrasting finish, as a previous owner refinished the body entirely in black and painted the chrome grille and emblems to match, lending it the appearance of a Grand National. The car now rides on the factory 15-inch aluminum T-Type wheels wrapped in Cooper tires.

The interior features the original gray cabin layout with a split bench seat, a digital dashboard, digital dual-zone climate control, and Buick’s Concert Sound audio system. An Astro Roof option is also included. Some features show age, including intermittent operation of the digital dashboard, an inoperable climate control unit, wear on the wheels, and a leaking power steering pump. Exterior imperfections include loose bumper trim and chips in the headlight surrounds.

Documentation includes a clean CARFAX report showing long-term Illinois registration dating back to 1987. The selling dealer now offers the Buick with a clean Illinois title. For collectors seeking a seldom-seen slice of Buick’s turbocharged era, this WH1-equipped T-Type presents a noteworthy opportunity as bidding continues. See it here.
