Rare 1956 Jaguar D-Type Headlines Broad Arrow’s Zurich Auction

Broad Arrow Auctions will offer a rare 1956 Jaguar D-Type in Zurich, an authentic unraced example with matching numbers.

A piece of British motorsport history is poised to draw international attention this fall as Broad Arrow Auctions presents a 1956 Jaguar D-Type at its Zurich Auction. Estimated to sell between CHF 5.25 million and CHF 6.25 million, the car represents one of only 71 D-Types built between 1954 and 1957.

The Jaguar D-Type is renowned for its dominance at Le Mans, where the model secured three consecutive overall victories from 1955 to 1957. While many examples were campaigned on track, this particular car stands out as an unraced, matching-numbers example that retains both its original chassis and engine. It is offered with a Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate and a forthcoming CKL report verifying authenticity.

Ownership history is equally notable. The car has remained with the same private Swiss collector since 1994 and has benefitted from decades of careful upkeep by regional specialists. A full rebuild of the original engine was completed in 2005 by Sportgarage Ruch AG; the motor was later set aside and has now been reinstalled in preparation for the auction. More recently, the braking system underwent a comprehensive CHF 29,000 overhaul in December 2024, ensuring the car is presented in highly sorted condition.

Beyond its provenance and originality, the D-Type offers entry into some of the world’s most prestigious historic events. Eligible venues include the Goodwood Revival, Le Mans Classic, and Mille Miglia Storica, where period-correct race cars like this are highly prized.

With its distinctive aerodynamic bodywork and unmatched record on the endurance stage, the Jaguar D-Type remains one of the most important sports racing cars of the 20th century. For collectors, the Zurich sale offers a rare chance to acquire an authentic example of Coventry’s Le Mans-winning legend. See it here.
