This reimagined Scout Traveler pairs rugged off-road roots with a Vortec V8, custom interior, and LS-powered drivability.
A 1978 International Scout II Traveler fitted with a modern Vortec V8 and thoroughly upgraded inside and out has emerged as a standout offering for classic SUV fans with a taste for custom craftsmanship and contemporary performance.

Once a diesel-powered utility vehicle from International Harvester, this long-wheelbase Traveler has been fully transformed over the past decade. Purchased in 2018, the current owner commissioned a full drivetrain transplant, installing a 5.3-liter Vortec V8 sourced from a 2011 Silverado. The engine, outfitted with a Texas Speed Stage 3 cam and matched to a 6L80 six-speed automatic transmission with a manual tap shifter, was mated to Dana 44 axles and a four-wheel disc brake system—bringing modern performance to a vintage platform.

The fiberglass body, including its integral extended roof, was refinished in a tri-tone paint scheme: Gray Brown with a Gold Dust midcoat, contrasted by Diamond Ice white and a Gold Mist Metallic stripe. Additional upgrades include Bilstein shocks, stainless headers, Flowmaster mufflers, and BFGoodrich All-Terrain tires mounted on 16-inch American Racing wheels.
Inside, the Scout has been overhauled with a fresh carpet kit, reupholstered rear seat and door cards, Corbeau front bucket seats, and a Grant wood-rimmed steering wheel. A Kenwood Bluetooth stereo with marine-grade speakers and a Tuffy locking console brings both security and sound to the cabin. Sound deadening from Dynamat, new seals, and air conditioning converted to R134A ensure comfort and refinement.

The vehicle’s frame-off restoration began in the 1990s with a previous owner, and the latest upgrades make it a road- and trail-ready example of how vintage utility vehicles can be transformed into functional modern classics.
Included with the Scout are service records, the original owner’s manual, and accessories such as a RIG’d hitch carrier and spare tire cover. Minor paint imperfections are noted, but the custom build is otherwise turnkey and ready for adventure.

With Scout values on the rise, this tastefully reimagined Traveler bridges the gap between nostalgic appeal and everyday drivability—ideal for collectors and off-road enthusiasts alike.
