A restored 1977 Pontiac Trans Am finished in its iconic Starlight Black paint is scheduled to cross the auction block at Mecum’s Original Spring Classic in Indianapolis on May 15, drawing attention from collectors and muscle car enthusiasts.
The Trans Am represents a significant chapter in Pontiac’s performance legacy, which emerged during the height of the American muscle car era. Following the success of Ford’s Mustang in the mid-1960s and Chevrolet’s introduction of the Camaro in 1966, Pontiac quickly entered the segment with the Firebird. By 1969, the division elevated its offering with the debut of the Trans Am performance and appearance package, inspired by the popular racing series. Early production numbers were limited, underscoring the model’s exclusivity during its formative years.
Despite tightening regulations in the 1970s, including fuel economy standards and emissions controls, Pontiac continued refining performance variants. The Trans Am remained a standout, particularly with earlier Super Duty models that delivered strong output compared to competitors of the time.
By 1977, the Trans Am had evolved into both a performance car and a cultural icon. The Starlight Black exterior paired with gold accents and distinctive styling helped define its image. Its prominence in film further boosted its popularity, contributing to surging sales figures in subsequent years and elevating the model’s status within the muscle car market.
The example heading to auction has been restored to reflect its original appearance, featuring black paint with gold pinstriping and a matching black bucket seat interior. Under the hood sits a 6.6-liter Pontiac L78 engine producing 230 horsepower, paired with a four-speed manual transmission. It includes the W-72 Performance Package and a range of period-correct features such as T-Tops, a center console, machine-turned dash trim, and an AM-FM cassette system.
Additional equipment includes power steering, power brakes, a Tic-Toc-Tach gauge cluster, and gold snowflake wheels fitted with raised white letter radial tires. Documentation from the Pontiac Historical Society accompanies the vehicle, adding to its provenance as it heads to auction.
