1969 Volkswagen Deserter GT Dune Buggy Hits the Market With Corvair Power and Racing Pedigree

A historically significant Deserter GT Dune Buggy with Corvair power and racing roots emerges in stunning restored condition.

A rare piece of dune buggy and racing history has surfaced with the listing of a fully restored 1969 Volkswagen Deserter GT. Built originally by Alex Dearborn of Auto Dynamics in Marblehead, Massachusetts, this example represents an important chapter in the evolution of American sports and racing cars.

Dearborn, a pioneer in SCCA race car development, experimented extensively with Corvair and Porsche engines in his Deserter GT builds. Produced only from 1969 through 1972, these buggies were engineered with serious performance in mind—far beyond the casual fiberglass kits of the era. This particular Deserter GT sports a Corvair 2683cc engine, delivering a potent mix of power and reliability, making it a standout among surviving examples.

The 84-inch wheelbase buggy has been recently refinished in its original large metal flake blue, paying tribute to its period-correct look. Performance upgrades include a new Edelbrock four-barrel carburetor, K&N velocity stack, mild cam, aluminum-finned oil pan, and custom headers with a throaty exhaust note. Vintage Corvair SC Performance VW and Chevy aluminum valve covers add to its authenticity, while Taylor ignition wires and fresh 20W50 VR1 oil ensure it’s ready to run.

Original stainless-steel front and rear bumpers, bullet-style GT mirrors, and period-correct “fat” steering wheel keep its vintage character intact. Inside, racing seats with belts, a center console with cup holders, a vintage VW Hurst shifter, and a Kenwood CD player make it both functional and fun.

Rolling on polished aluminum wheels wrapped in BFGoodrich Radial T/As—15x7 in the front and massive 15x10 rears—the Deserter GT offers an aggressive stance, enhanced by adjustable front suspension for improved handling.

Whether viewed as a collectible, a vintage racer, or a nostalgic weekend cruiser, this 1969 Deserter GT represents a rare opportunity to own a buggy built by one of the biggest names in SCCA racing history. With its Corvair power and period-correct restoration, it stands as both a conversation piece and a legitimate performance machine.
