1957 Porsche 356 A Carrera GT/GT to Cross Broad Arrow Monterey Auction Block

One of 26 factory-built 1957 Porsche 356 A Carrera GT/GT Lightweights with racing history heads to Broad Arrow Monterey.

A meticulously restored 1957 Porsche 356 A Carrera GT/GT Lightweight Coupe, one of just 26 built, is set to command attention at Broad Arrow Auctions’ Monterey Jet Center sale on August 14, 2025. Estimated at $900,000 to $1.2 million, this historic Porsche combines rare factory lightweight construction with documented U.S. racing pedigree.

Chassis 100913 retains its original four-cam type 547/1 engine, transmission, and lightweight Reutter coachwork, verified by its factory Kardex and Reutter Certificate of Production. Originally finished in Silver Metallic over black leatherette, the coupe was built for competition use, featuring Plexiglas windows, Speedster bucket seats, lightweight bumper mounts, and an enlarged 80-liter fuel tank.

Delivered new through Hoffman Motors of New York in June 1957, the car was immediately campaigned by SCCA Champion Dr. Dick Thompson, famously known as “The Flying Dentist.” Under Hoffman’s banner, the Porsche competed at major events including the inaugural Virginia International Raceway race, the Montgomery SCCA Nationals, and the Bahamas Speed Week, where factory mechanic Heinz Beda reportedly installed close-ratio gears trackside. Thompson achieved multiple podium finishes in 1957, cementing the car’s reputation as a competitive lightweight GT.

The car’s racing career extended through 1958 under privateer Michael Cappiello, who campaigned it at Lime Rock, Marlboro, and VIR, regularly finishing on the podium.

After decades in private collections, chassis 100913 underwent a comprehensive nut-and-bolt restoration from 2018 to 2021, performed by specialists including Speedsport Tuning, Euroworks, and 356 Enterprises. The car has since captured multiple concours wins, including Amelia Island, Hilton Head, Greenwich, and ModaMiami.

Offering matching-numbers authenticity, period racing history, and concours-winning restoration, this Carrera GT/GT is expected to draw strong interest from Porsche collectors worldwide when it crosses the Monterey block.
