A 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster, one of the most revered postwar sports cars ever produced, is set to go to auction later this month after spending more than two decades in a private estate collection. The vehicle, part of The Dane Miller Estate Collection, will cross the block as Lot #320 during the Auburn Spring 2026 sale scheduled for April 25.

The Roadster represents a pivotal chapter in Mercedes-Benz history, tracing its lineage to the brand’s dominant W194 race cars of the early 1950s. Those competition machines earned victories at some of the world’s most demanding events and laid the groundwork for the production 300SL models that followed. The earlier Gullwing coupe introduced advanced engineering, including a fuel-injected inline-six engine and a lightweight space-frame chassis, but its design posed challenges for everyday usability.

By 1957, Mercedes-Benz refined the formula with the introduction of the 300SL Roadster. The updated model retained the performance of its predecessor while incorporating a more practical design. A revised chassis allowed for conventional doors, while improvements to suspension and cabin comfort made the car better suited for grand touring. Despite these refinements, the Roadster maintained its reputation for performance, with its 3.0-liter fuel-injected engine and four-speed manual gearbox continuing to define the driving experience.

The example heading to auction has been part of The Dane Miller Estate Collection for 26 years. It was acquired in Auburn, Indiana, and has since been maintained in a climate-controlled facility. The car retains its original numbers-matching engine, chassis, and body, supported by documentation including a factory data card. Originally delivered through Studebaker-Packard in South Bend, Indiana, it has undergone a color change from black over white to a more widely recognized Silver Grey Metallic over red leather interior.

Recent preparation for sale included a comprehensive mechanical refresh and detailed cosmetic work, ensuring the car remains both drivable and visually striking. Accompanying items include factory tools, spare components, and original documentation.

With limited production totaling fewer than 2,000 units, the 300SL Roadster continues to stand as a highly sought-after collector car. Its combination of racing heritage, engineering innovation, and timeless design has solidified its status among the most desirable automobiles of its era. See it here.
