A striking tribute to one of Porsche's most storied competition programs has surfaced for sale, and it's currently up for auction on Hagerty Marketplace, where bidding for this 1971 Porsche 914/6 GT Brumos Tribute is already climbing past the $30,000 mark.
While the vast majority of the roughly 119,000 Porsche 914s built ran flat-four engines, a special run of about 3,300 cars left the factory with six-cylinder power between 1969 and 1972. Porsche's Customer Sport Department took a handful of these 914/6 models further still, transforming them into the race-ready 914/6 GT with a stiffened chassis, uprated suspension, ventilated brakes, a long-range fuel tank, and flared steel fenders covering widened Fuchs alloys. Those cars proved their worth almost immediately. Driven by Brumos Racing's Peter Gregg and Hurley Haywood, a factory 914/6 GT won the inaugural 1971 IMSA GT race at Virginia International Raceway and carried the team to the championship that same season.
That success left such an impression that when Brumos returned to vintage racing in the mid-1990s, the team began building 914/6 GT tributes for its own customers, and this car carries that lineage forward. Originally built as a 1971 914/4, it has since been transformed into a GT-style tribute wearing the classic orange favored by Ferry Porsche and adopted by Brumos, paired with a black and orange cockpit. Widened fenders wrap around 15-inch Fuchs wheels shod in Hoosier racing rubber, while the rebuilt 1,991cc flat-six benefits from forged internals, a custom camshaft, upgraded cylinder heads, and a twin-plug distributor for crisp, reliable ignition.
The car's five-speed manual transaxle and period-correct #59 Porsche/Audi Brumos livery only add to the sense that this little coupe means business. Its current owner has held the car for roughly five years, using it for the occasional track day rather than wheel-to-wheel competition, which means a new caretaker inherits a machine that's been driven with care while still remaining eligible for vintage racing with the right preparation.
Offered from the Autobahn Speed Collection through Hagerty Garage + Social in Savannah, Georgia, this 914/6 GT tribute is a rare chance to own a slice of Brumos Racing heritage without the seven-figure price tag that a factory-built example would command. For fans of giant-killing Porsches and IMSA's golden era, it's hard to imagine a more charismatic way into vintage motorsport.
