Rare 1964 Oldsmobile 442 Hardtop Emerges After Full Restoration

A fully restored 1964 Oldsmobile Cutlass F85 442 hardtop is drawing renewed interest as a rare example of early muscle car performance, combining vintage styling with rebuilt mechanicals and a limited production background.

This particular model, one of just 158 produced in 1964, represents a pivotal moment in Oldsmobile’s performance history. Originally designed as a refined yet capable performance car, the 442 package paired V8 power with a more driver-focused setup. In its era, the model gained recognition for its performance credentials, even seeing use in law enforcement applications during the mid-1960s.

The car now being offered has undergone a complete frame-off restoration, with its drivetrain comprehensively rebuilt. Under the hood sits a 330 cubic inch V8, rebuilt in 2024 and enhanced with a performance camshaft. The engine is paired with a four-barrel carburetor and a Muncie M20 four-speed manual transmission. Power is delivered to the rear through a 12-bolt axle equipped with 4.11 gearing and Positraction.

Finished in Ebony Black, the exterior reflects classic 1960s design with sharp lines and extensive chrome and stainless trim. Signature 442 badging appears on the fenders and rear, while Magnum 500 wheels and staggered tires add a slightly more aggressive stance. Minor imperfections are limited to small scratches in the trim, with the overall presentation described as exceptionally clean.

Inside, the cabin contrasts with Saddle brown leather upholstery, including front bucket seats and a rear bench, all appearing well preserved. The dashboard features a simple horizontal layout with period-correct gauges and trim, complemented by additional instrumentation and a vintage-style tachometer. A center console with a floor-mounted shifter reinforces the car’s performance character.

The restoration extends underneath, where the chassis and suspension components have been refreshed to a high standard. The vehicle retains its dual exhaust system, upgraded braking setup, and a clean undercarriage that reflects the thoroughness of the rebuild.

With just over 66,000 miles showing, though true mileage remains unknown, this 1964 Oldsmobile 442 stands as a rare and carefully restored example of an early muscle car, blending historical significance with renewed performance capability.
