A clean-titled, first-year Suzuki Sidekick has popped up for sale at no reserve on Hagerty Marketplace, and it comes dressed for adventure. Listed by a seller in Las Vegas, this 1989 JLX hardtop wears a modest collection of period-correct off-road gear while retaining the boxy charm that made Suzuki's baby SUV a cult favorite among budget-minded enthusiasts.
Painted in Polar White with a fading tri-tone graphics package, the two-door JLX represents the upper trim of Suzuki's original Sidekick lineup. Under the hood sits the familiar 1.6-liter inline-four, paired here with a three-speed automatic transmission and a dual-range transfer case that sends power to either the rear wheels or all four, depending on the terrain. It's a formula that made the Sidekick an unlikely favorite for buyers who wanted genuine off-road capability without the bulk or expense of a full-size truck.
This particular truck has clearly been set up for use rather than left to sit. A push bar and winch lead the charge up front, while a tubular rear bumper guard and roof basket round out the exterior hardware. Hella auxiliary lights are mounted both on the bumper and the roof rack, and a set of 12-hole, 15-inch wheels wrapped in aggressive off-road rubber replace the factory rollers, with a matching spare riding on the tailgate-mounted carrier.
Inside, gray cloth bucket seats and a folding rear bench are joined by a surprising list of comfort features for a truck this size and age, including a tilt steering column, power steering, cruise control, and power windows, locks, and mirrors. A Kenwood head unit with Bluetooth connectivity brings the audio system into the modern era, and the ignition has been converted to push-button operation. Not everything is perfect, though: the seller notes worn trim, faded exterior graphics, a tear in the driver's seat, and an air conditioning system that no longer blows cold.
The CARFAX report attached to the listing shows no accident history, though it does flag an odometer discrepancy: the reading jumped from 84,878 miles in September 2007 down to 4,452 miles by September 2009, suggesting the five-digit odometer rolled over at some point. The current dash reads 77,900 miles. Registration history traces the Sidekick through New Jersey, New York, California, and Nevada, with a gap between 1991 and 1999, and the current seller took ownership in June 2025.
The comments section adds a bittersweet note to the sale. When asked about the non-functioning air conditioning, the seller explained that her husband had purchased a collection of parts to fix it himself, but passed away before he could finish the job. Those parts are included in the sale for whoever takes on the project next.
