Coyote-Swapped 1977 Lincoln Continental Reimagines Classic Luxury With Modern Power

A 1977 Lincoln Continental Town Car has been extensively rebuilt and modernized, transforming the classic luxury sedan into a discreet high-performance sleeper with contemporary mechanical upgrades and significantly increased power. The project centered on replacing the original 400 cubic inch V8, which produced 179 horsepower and 329 lb-ft of torque, with a second-generation Ford Coyote V8 delivering 435 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque.

The build was completed by Carlson Hot Rods in Mulvane, Kansas, with total receipts exceeding $114,000. Work included a full repaint in Ford Tuxedo Metallic Black, installation of a new vinyl roof, and refinishing of exterior brightwork with triple chrome plating. The suspension was lowered by three inches in the front and two inches in the rear, while shock absorbers, bushings, ball joints, and tie rods were replaced.

Brake and steering components were also rebuilt, including the power steering pump and brake booster. The front disc and rear drum brakes were overhauled as part of the refurbishment. The car now rides on lace-spoked 15-inch alloy wheels fitted with 235/75 Suretrac Power Touring whitewall tires.

The Lincoln Continental name dates back to a custom vehicle developed for Edsel Ford in 1939, eventually evolving into one of America’s defining personal luxury cars. Through multiple generations, the Continental became a flagship model for Lincoln, known for comfort, isolation, and formal styling. The fifth generation, introduced in 1970 and produced through 1979, returned to body-on-frame construction and emphasized size, ride quality, and traditional luxury during a period marked by emissions regulations, fuel crises, and safety changes.

The Town Car trim represented the top tier of the Continental lineup in the 1970s, combining formal design elements with premium interiors and a focus on quiet, comfortable driving.

This particular example was restored and modified in 2023 and is now offered for sale out of Sarasota, Florida. The vehicle includes build records, manufacturer literature, an Ownercard, and a clean Pennsylvania title.
