A rare restomod blending modern engineering with one of Mercedes-Benz’s most iconic designs has surfaced for sale at nearly $300,000. Created by Signature Autosports, the build transforms a 2014 SLK 55 AMG into a contemporary homage to the legendary 300SL Gullwing. The result, known as the 355 SL, offers the proportions and drama of the mid-1950s classic without the upkeep burdens associated with owning a vintage car.
The original 300SL, produced from 1954 to 1957, is considered one of the most valuable and recognizable sports cars in the world. Its design has shaped generations of Mercedes performance models, but genuine examples command multimillion-dollar prices and require specialized maintenance. Signature Autosports aimed to capture the aesthetic appeal of the original while preserving modern drivability, safety and comfort. The chosen donor platform—the naturally aspirated SLK 55 AMG—provides a strong foundation.

Under the hood, the 355 SL retains the SLK’s 5.5-liter V8, an engine built during the final era before Mercedes transitioned to turbocharging. Factory output stands at 421 horsepower and 398 pound-feet of torque, delivered to the rear wheels through a seven-speed AMG Speedshift Plus automatic transmission. Signature Autosports enhanced the handling with KW coilovers offering adjustable height, rebound and compression.
Visual cues do the bulk of the transformation work. The black exterior paint hides dimensional differences between the restomod and a true 300SL, while custom 18-inch three-piece wheels accept 300SL hubcaps for authenticity. Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires supply modern grip. Roof-mounted gullwing doors, a defining trait of the 300SL lineage, complete the look and blur the line between old and new.

Inside, much of the SLK 55’s equipment remains, including heated power seats—modified without head restraints—air conditioning, updated audio and Bluetooth connectivity. What once felt like an early-2010s button-heavy dashboard now appears modern compared with the minimalist interiors of vintage sports cars. The restomod also features Alcantara trim in the trunk and carries a clean California title despite showing more than 69,000 miles.
The asking price of $299,950 places the 355 SL well above the typical $40,000 value of a mint SLK 55 and even beyond the entry point for an SLS AMG. Yet compared with original 300SL Gullwing prices, which can exceed $6 million, Signature Autosports’ reinterpretation offers a far more accessible route into Gullwing styling with contemporary performance and everyday usability.
