Limited Production May Make Updated 2027 Nissan Z Harder to Buy

Nissan’s updated Z sports car is heading to the United States as a 2027 model, but prospective buyers may find the refreshed coupe surprisingly difficult to secure.

The facelifted version of the Z first surfaced quietly during last month’s Tokyo Auto Salon. The update arrived without a major announcement or formal debut, appearing instead as a subtle refinement to the existing model. The most noticeable change is at the front, where Nissan reshaped the nose and bumper to create a cleaner, softer look. The revised design draws inspiration from the original Fairlady Z while removing the sharper rectangular grille styling that previously defined the car’s face.

Despite the design tweaks, Nissan kept the formula largely intact. The standard Z gains the updated front bumper and grille along with suspension revisions and 19-inch wheels. The refresh also brings the return of a green exterior color. In Japan the shade is known as Unryu Green, while the United States will receive a version called Shinkai Green. Production for that color is expected to begin in June 2026, though a specific color code has not yet been confirmed.

Interior updates include a new tan cabin option that is expected to be available across multiple exterior colors, offering buyers additional personalization choices.

The bigger challenge may not be selecting options but simply finding a car to purchase. Information circulating on the Nissan Z Club forum, reportedly based on dealer-facing material, suggests Nissan is moving the model to a build-to-order style system in the United States. Under that approach, dealers are expected to receive extremely limited allocations.

Early estimates suggest dealers may average fewer than three Z units for the entire 2027 model year. With roughly 1,082 Nissan dealers across the country, that would translate to about 3,246 cars if every available slot is filled.

That figure would represent a noticeable drop compared with last year, when Nissan sold 5,487 Z coupes in the U.S.

The high-performance Z Nismo also receives notable updates. The model will add a manual transmission with a shorter, more precise shift feel along with unique engine and chassis tuning and a dedicated clutch setup. Wireless phone charging is also included as a new convenience feature.

With improved styling, new features and limited production, the 2027 Nissan Z could become one of the most sought-after versions of the modern sports coupe. Buyers hoping to secure one may need to rely on timing, dealership relationships and a measure of luck.
