The Lamborghini LM002, the rugged V12-powered sport utility vehicle often nicknamed the “Rambo Lambo,” is experiencing a sharp rise in collector demand, with top examples now commanding more than half a million dollars.
Originally introduced at the 1986 Brussels Auto Show, the LM002 traced its origins to a 1977 military project. Lamborghini initially developed a rear-engine prototype known as the Cheetah LM001 in pursuit of a U.S. Army contract. However, the rear-mounted engine compromised both handling and cabin space, and the concept never progressed beyond the prototype stage.

The project was reimagined under former Maserati designer Giulio Alfieri, who relocated the Countach-derived 5.2-liter V12 to the front. The change improved weight distribution and driving dynamics while allowing for a more spacious and luxurious interior capable of seating six passengers. The production LM002 also featured specialized Pirelli Scorpion run-flat tires and an early navigation system, blending off-road capability with high-end appointments aimed at affluent buyers.
Just 328 examples were produced over six years, contributing to the model’s rarity today. According to valuation data, concours-quality LM002s were estimated at $467,000 six months ago, with top sales now surpassing $500,000. Over the past five years, pristine examples have risen in value by more than 25 percent, climbing from $408,000 to $519,000. Auction results reflect that momentum, including a 1989 LM002A that sold for $703,500 in August 2024.
One standout example currently offered by vintage car seller Curated could further test the market. Completed July 13, 1990, and delivered new to Chrysler Italian Imports in New Jersey, the vehicle was part of a two-car order that also included a Diablo. Both were ultimately delivered in June 1991 to the original owner in Florida.
Finished in Bianco Perlato over a Rosso and Bianco interior, the LM002 remains in factory configuration and is powered by the L520i fuel-injected V12 shared with the Countach. With just 6,700 kilometers recorded, it has undergone extensive restoration by an acknowledged LM002 specialist. All lighting, switchgear and instrumentation remain operational, and original features such as the removable tonneau cover and color-matched spare housing are intact.

While an asking price has not been disclosed, the LM002’s recent performance suggests that exceptional examples continue to solidify their status as both collectible icons and appreciating assets.
