Jay Leno receives his 2025 Mustang GTD and drives it for the first time with Ford CEO Jim Farley.
Legendary car enthusiast Jay Leno has officially taken delivery of his 2025 Ford Mustang GTD, and he’s already hit the road behind the wheel—accompanied by none other than Ford CEO Jim Farley.
The high-performance Mustang GTD, announced in 2023 and developed as a road-going version of a GT3 racer, is Ford’s most aggressive take on the muscle car icon to date. Leno’s long-anticipated first drive aired this week on Jay Leno’s Garage, offering an exclusive look at one of the first GTDs delivered to a customer.
Leno’s GTD is painted in a deep metallic blue, accented by exposed carbon fiber, and bears the production number 12—matching other limited-edition Mustangs in his collection. The GTD is powered by a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 engine producing 815 horsepower, paired with a dual-clutch transmission mounted in the rear for better weight distribution.
“It’s like a GT3 car for the street,” Leno said as he climbed in for the maiden drive.
Joining Leno for the episode was Jim Farley, who provided insight into the GTD’s development, including its Nürburgring lap time of 6 minutes and 52 seconds—a mark that places it among the fastest production cars on the planet.
The Mustang GTD’s rear suspension, visible through a glass window behind the cockpit, drew particular attention from both men. The car also features a track-focused Drag Reduction System (DRS), adaptive suspension, and over 2,000 pounds of downforce at speed, yet Leno noted how surprisingly livable it felt for everyday driving.
“This is more than just a halo car,” Farley said. “It’s a statement about what Ford is capable of in both motorsports and road cars.”
Leno’s GTD includes signatures from the entire GTD engineering team, marking a personal touch from those behind the build. For fans of high-performance engineering and Mustang heritage, the full episode offers an inside look at how Ford’s most extreme Mustang ever performs on California roads.
