Old-school muscle cars with massive superchargers dominate modern Dodge Hellcats in stunning quarter-mile drag races in Las Vegas.
The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway witnessed a classic muscle-car showdown recently, as two modern Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcats faced fierce competition from a pair of heavily modified vintage rivals—a blown Chevrolet Camaro SS and a pink Plymouth Barracuda, each sporting massive superchargers.
Captured by YouTube’s popular Wheels channel, the event highlighted an exciting "built versus bought" matchup, showcasing both classic and modern American muscle at their limits.
In the first high-powered battle, a widebody Dodge Challenger Hellcat, painted gray with distinctive black stripes, squared off against a meticulously prepared first-generation Camaro SS. The classic Chevy featured a huge supercharger towering from its hood, signaling its serious racing intent.
Both vehicles exploded off the line, but the Camaro quickly asserted dominance, roaring to an impressive quarter-mile time of 10.25 seconds. The Hellcat, despite its supercharged Hemi V8, trailed behind, finishing with a still respectable but notably slower 11.43-second pass.
Yet the real drama unfolded in the second face-off, where another Hellcat—this one finished in menacing dark gray—went head-to-head against a spectacularly vibrant pink 1970s-era Plymouth Barracuda. Equipped with an even larger blower assembly that appeared more suited to a drag strip than street cruising, the Barracuda delivered an electrifying performance.
Launching fiercely, the pink Barracuda surged ahead early and maintained the lead, setting an extraordinary 8.77-second quarter-mile pass. The modern Challenger Hellcat fought valiantly but fell short, crossing the finish line in 9.2 seconds—a blistering speed in its own right, yet not enough to catch the vintage powerhouse.
The event also featured other exciting matchups, including a close encounter involving a C7 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1, showcasing the variety and passion of racers and spectators alike.
These thrilling matchups underline the enduring appeal of classic American muscle cars, reminding enthusiasts that, when properly tuned and boosted, vintage machines can still confidently outrun their modern counterparts.
