Civilian-Converted AM General M998 HMMWV Blends Military Grit With Custom Luxury

Once a symbol of military might, the AM General M998 HMMWV has found new life as a reimagined, road-ready luxury machine. This 1992 four-door slant-back example, restored and customized by Military Truck Works of Mundelein, Illinois, transforms the rugged High-Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle into something entirely new—equal parts combat-tested hardware and high-end craftsmanship.

Acquired by its current owner in 2019, the truck underwent an extensive refresh that stripped it down to the frame before a full repaint in matte gray. Military Truck Works re-engineered much of the vehicle, adding new springs, LED lighting, and 20-inch black wheels wrapped in 39-inch Kanati Mud Hog tires. The upgrades maintain the HMMWV’s signature toughness while enhancing its stance and drivability for civilian roads.

Under the hood remains the proven 6.2-liter diesel V8, factory-rated at 150 horsepower and 250 lb-ft of torque, paired to a four-speed 4L80E automatic transmission and a dual-range transfer case. Power is distributed to all four wheels through an independent suspension system and inboard disc brakes—a setup that still delivers the off-road durability the platform was built for.

Inside, the utilitarian cabin of the original military model has been replaced by a surprisingly plush environment. The new interior features six custom bucket seats trimmed in black vinyl with diamond stitching, a suede Alcantara headliner, carbon-fiber-style trim, and even air conditioning—an unheard-of luxury in its military service days. The dashboard has been refitted with Speedhut gauges, a MOMO steering wheel, and an Alpine head unit with Apple CarPlay connected to a four-speaker setup and dual Rockford Fosgate subwoofers.

Finished with details like a rearview camera, power windows, and a locking center console, this custom HMMWV proves that the once-barebones battlefield transporter can evolve into a striking showpiece. Still capable, still commanding, and now unmistakably stylish, this modernized M998 bridges two worlds—the grit of military precision and the comfort of civilian refinement.
