BMW has unveiled the next evolution of its iconic 3 Series, introducing an all-electric i3 sedan as part of its new Neue Klasse lineup, signaling a major shift in the brand’s future direction.
The newly revealed model represents the second vehicle in BMW’s next-generation electric family, following the iX3 SUV. Drawing inspiration from the original Neue Klasse vehicles of the 1960s, which played a key role in shaping the company’s identity, the latest models aim to redefine BMW’s approach to electric mobility while distinguishing it more clearly from its gasoline-powered offerings.
Unlike previous electric models that closely mirrored their internal combustion counterparts, the new i3 has been developed as a standalone design. The mid-size sedan adopts a more assertive and modern appearance, featuring sharp body lines, a forward-leaning front end, and illuminated kidney grilles. Its proportions appear larger and more muscular than expected, giving it a stronger road presence.
Inside, the cabin introduces a simplified and more contemporary layout. The five-seat interior incorporates a rectangular steering wheel and a large 18-inch infotainment display. Traditional instrument gauges have been replaced by a slim, full-width screen positioned at the base of the windshield, known as Panoramic iDrive. Additional features include an available head-up display and advanced driver assistance capabilities.

Underpinning the i3 is a new 800-volt electrical architecture shared with the iX3. The initial variant, the i3 50 xDrive, uses a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive system that produces 463 horsepower and 476 pound-feet of torque. While official performance figures have not yet been released, output levels place it in line with some of the brand’s high-performance models.
Range remains a central focus, with BMW projecting the sedan will be capable of traveling up to 440 miles on a single charge based on EPA estimates. The battery system features improved energy density and supports charging speeds of up to 400 kilowatts under optimal conditions.

BMW expects the i3 to reach the U.S. market before the end of the year, with pricing details to be announced closer to its release.
