Own History With This 1926 Excelsior Super X

This racing bike used to be Steve McQueen’s.

It’s a well-known fact Mecum Auctions often gets some amazing vehicles, and this 1926 Excelsior Super X is certainly proof of that. Formerly owned by the legendary Steve  McQueen, this vintage racing hillclimber is the kind of motorcycle that  belongs in a museum. It’s an extremely rare machine, even when it comes  to the already uncommon professional hill racers, making it a prime  investment vehicle for the serious collector.

Sitting in a beautiful display case which is included with the bike,  this Excelsior Super X is a good-looking motorcycle. An older  restoration has left the green paint and that leather saddle looking  authentic and good. McQueen was such a fan he would ride this around his  ranch in Santa Paula as well as the surrounding neighborhood, despite  the extremely loud short exhaust stubs.

Designed to run on alcohol, the 750cc two-cylinder motor is certainly  a raucous piece of machinery, and yes it does still run. You can’t  legally ride this motorcycle on the highway or any public roads, however  it’s an excellent thing to add to your vehicle collection.

Excelsior was a dominant force in motorcycle racing and the consumer  market back in the 1920s, going toe-to-toe with Harley-Davidson and  Indian. That alone makes this bike significant, but the fact McQueen  owned it only adds to its value. When it was originally decommissioned  from racing, this Excelsior was purchased by Hollywood stuntman Bud  Ekins, who in turn sold it to McQueen. It was auctioned from McQueen’s  estate in 1984 and has a well-documented history.

If you have questions about this motorcycle, it’s best to contact Mecum Auctions directly. You can also check out the other interesting collector cars they have headed to auction in the near future.

One of the big concerns you’ll face when buying a collector-grade  vehicle like this is figuring out how to get it home. Mecum does offer auto transport services which will drop your purchase right in front of your garage. Mecum also offers financing options to help you obtain your dream ride.
